Curious Forker_Furious Corker 2 months agoAs a recent resident in downtown, the Trader Joe’s at 44 E Ontario has become an essential part of our weekly routine. While many know the "lore"—that it’s owned by Theo Albrecht of Aldi Nord (separate from Aldi Süd-owned Aldi US)—this location feels much more personal than a standard grocery chain. Even though I’ve "graduated" from the days of the "Two-Buck Chuck," their wine selection remains sophisticated and incredibly well-priced. Living in a nearby condo, the convenience of this location is unbeatable, but it’s the curated, small-store feel that keeps me coming back. My "Can't-Miss" Recommendations: The Produce: I love that they sell bananas by the count, not by weight—it’s a small detail that makes checkout so much smoother. Private Label Staples: The Mango Vanilla Cream Bars and Garlic Naan are permanent fixtures in my freezer. International Tastes: The Greek Style Eggplant is phenomenal, and I always stock up on both the sweet and savory Plantain Chips. While TJ’s is often associated with highly educated singles looking for value, as a retiree, I find it hits the perfect sweet spot: high-quality international tastes, manageable store sizes, and genuine value. It is truly the "Human Element" of grocery shopping in River North.
Jill M 6 months agoThis Trader Joe’s is my once-a-month pilgrimage, and honestly, it’s worth every extra mile. I’ve always loved the Trader Joe’s brand, but this location is my current go-to, especially during the holidays when the store is basically one giant, festive temptation trap. Pro tip, don’t come here hungry or if you’re on a diet. There is temptation everywhere you turn, and yes, that includes treats for your pets, who will absolutely judge you if you don’t buy them something. Always sample whatever they’re sampling, and don’t skip the end caps, that’s where the fun new items like to hide. And don’t skip the Charles Shaw wine, not because it’s fancy, but because the white wine is perfect for cooking, especially with seafood, and costs less than your morning coffee. If you’re curious about something but on the fence, just ask, the staff is happy to open products so you can try them in store, which feels both dangerous and delightful. I’ve also found their return policy to be refreshingly flexible if something doesn’t work out, which makes trying new things feel low-risk and high-reward. Bottom line, a little out of the way for me, but absolutely worth the trip, especially if you enjoy leaving the store wondering how you spent that much money and carrying bags that feel heavier than your life choices.
Pedro Priori a year agoMy favorite supermarket in the US! Friendly staff, great products, and the music 🎶 is always nice and fun - there is always good music playing in the stores. Lots of products are exclusive to Trader's! Worth visiting
Andrei Rusu 4 months agoMy favorite grocery store in the US. A bit more expensive than others in the area but I think it’s completely worth it
Jason Diekmeyer 2 months agoTrader joes had great prices and good selection for a smaller store. Id say the always crowded situation is a bit difficult, however, it means they are popular and everyone must enjoy the products and shopping here. Its a little high energy and hectic but worth it.
